The LCTL Center Philosophy

The Less-Commonly-Taught Languages (LCTL) Center supports communicative language teaching as a way for our students to obtain the most from their language-learning experiences.

We emphasize the acquisition of grammar and vocabulary as necessary tools for spontaneous, creative, and meaningful communication, rather than language-learning strategies in and of themselves.

In the classroom, we encourage conversation, small-group problem solving, and other tasks that simulate real-life uses of language. In essence, the focus is on learning how to use the studied language rather than only learning about it. We encourage you to take one or several of our classes. You’ll be glad that you did!
